Moonstone — Gemstone Properties

Moonstone

Moonstone is a feldspar mineral named for its glowing adularescence — a soft, billowing light that rolls across the surface like moonlight on water. Revered for centuries in India and Rome, it is said to balance emotions, enhance intuition, and bring calm during times of change. Each stone is unique; the blue shimmer you see is caused by light scattering between microscopic layers of feldspar within the gem.

What does Moonstone symbolise?

Moonstone is widely regarded as the stone of new beginnings, inner growth, and feminine energy. It is associated with the lunar cycle and is thought to heighten intuition and calm emotional turbulence.

How should I care for my Moonstone jewellery?

Moonstone rates 6–6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it relatively delicate. Clean with a soft, damp cloth and mild soap. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, harsh chemicals, and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can cause colour fading.

Is Moonstone suitable for everyday wear?

Moonstone is best suited to occasional or evening wear rather than daily use. Its relatively low hardness means it can scratch if knocked against harder surfaces. Store separately in a soft pouch when not in use.

Where is Moonstone sourced?

The finest moonstones come from Sri Lanka (Ceylon), where the classic blue-sheen variety originates. Other significant sources include India, Madagascar, Myanmar, and Australia. At Divine Quartz, we work with ethically sourced stones traced to responsible mines.
